The Cartouche has a long lasting legend that dates back over 5000 years ago. It was believed by the Pharaohs that the design of the Cartouche would protect them in their travels. It was with this belief, they had their skilled craftsmen assemble these symbols of protection. Each Cartouche had the name of the person wearing it written in Egyptian Hieroglyphics King Tut, Ramses, Nefertiti, Cleopatra. In ancient Egypt, each royal personage had a cartouche (pronounced "kar-toosh")--a unique hieroglyphic nameplate imbued with good fortune and the power to ward off evil spirits. Our personalized cartouche pendants, handmade in a Cairo workshop, display your name or initials (up to 8 letters) in sterling silver or 18K gold in English, Arabic or Hieroglyphics.

In ancient Egyptian mythology, Horus was one of five offspring of the original pair of Egyptian gods, Ra and Rhea. Horus' siblings were Osiris, Set, Isis, and Nephthys. Osiris succeeded Ra as king of Egypt and married Isis, his sister. Their brother, Set, slew Osiris, who descended to preside over the land of the dead. The widow, Isis, called upon her brother, Horus, to destroy Set, which he did after many battles. Eventually, Osiris was resurrected.

The scarab flowered as a symbol of dawn, resurrection, and eternal life during the Middle Kingdom (1938-c. 1600 BC). The scarab lays its eggs in a ball of dung, hence its common name, dung-beetle. It may be seen on sandy slopes in the hot sunshine of Egypt.
